What Age Should Kids Start Tennis?

3 video lessons

Earlier than you think, with small courts, slow balls and lots of fun.

Quick answer & tips ▾

Many kids can start simple tennis games around four to six years old, using smaller courts, shorter racquets and slower red or foam balls. At that age the goal is coordination, movement and enjoyment rather than perfect technique.

There is no single right age, and starting later is fine too. Look for short, playful sessions, let the child try a few sports, and move up to orange, green and then yellow balls as they grow.

Key tips

  • Use a junior racquet sized to your child's height.
  • Start with slower red or foam balls on a small court.
  • Keep sessions short and game-based.
  • Let them play other sports too.

FAQ

Is 3 too young for tennis?
Some three-year-olds enjoy ball games with a racquet, but most structured programs start around four or five. At any age, the focus should be play and coordination.
Is it too late to start tennis at 10 or older?
No. Plenty of players start at ten or later and become strong players. Older beginners often learn technique faster because their coordination is more developed.
