Quick answer & tips ▾Hide answer ▴
Poaching means the net player crossing over to intercept a ball meant for their partner. Time your move so you start just as the returner commits to their swing, then move diagonally forward toward the net, not sideways along it.
Commit fully once you go, and aim the volley at the feet of the opposing net player or through the middle. Let your partner know when you plan to poach so they can cover the side you leave open.
Key tips
- Move forward and across, closing in on the net.
- Do not leave too early or the returner will go down the line.
- Volley at the net player's feet or into the gap in the middle.
- Use simple signals or a quick word with your partner.
FAQ
- When should I poach in doubles?
- Good times include after a strong serve from your partner, when the returner has been hitting predictable crosscourt returns, or against a weak second-serve return. Start your move as the returner commits to the shot.
- What does my partner do when I poach?
- They switch to cover the side of the court you left. If you poach from the right, your partner moves to the left, so both sides stay covered.
