Quick answer & tips ▾Hide answer ▴
The server usually stands about halfway between the center mark and the doubles sideline. The server's partner stands near the middle of the service box on their side, close enough to the net to volley but far enough back to cover a lob.
The returner stands where they can cover both a wide serve and one down the middle, and their partner usually starts around the service line, ready to move up or back. During the point, teammates move together like they are connected by a rope, side to side and up and back.
Key tips
- Server's partner: do not stand too close to the alley.
- Cover the middle; most doubles points are won and lost there.
- Move with your partner as a unit.
- Return crosscourt and low to keep the net player out of the point.
FAQ
- Should both players be at the net in doubles?
- Two players at the net is usually the strongest position because it takes time away from the opponents. Many club teams play one up and one back, which works too, but it leaves a gap through the middle and at sharp angles.
- Where should the server's partner stand?
- Roughly in the middle of the service box on their side of the court, a few steps from the net. Standing too wide leaves the middle open; standing too close makes you easy to lob.
