How to Volley in Tennis

8 video lessons

Short punch, firm wrist and feet moving through the ball.

Quick answer & tips ▾

A volley is hit before the ball bounces, usually near the net. Use a continental grip, keep the racquet out in front of you with the head above your wrist, and turn your shoulders slightly to set the racquet beside the ball instead of taking a backswing.

Then step forward with the opposite foot and punch or block the ball, keeping the wrist firm and the swing short. Most of the power comes from the incoming ball and your body moving forward, not from swinging.

Key tips

  • No backswing: if you can see the racquet behind you, it went too far.
  • Split step as your opponent hits, then move toward the ball.
  • Keep the racquet head up, bending your knees for low volleys.
  • Aim deep or at your opponent's feet, not just back to them.

FAQ

What grip should I use to volley?
The continental grip. It works on both the forehand and backhand side, so you do not need to change grips when the ball comes at you quickly.
Why do my volleys go into the net?
Common causes are dropping the racquet head on low balls, swinging down at the ball or not moving your feet. Bend your knees to get down to low balls and keep the racquet face slightly open.
