How to Hit a Backhand Volley
5 video lessons
Turn the shoulder, keep the wrist firm, punch short.
Quick answer & tips ▾Hide ▴
The backhand volley is a short block, not a swing. Use a continental grip, turn your front shoulder toward the ball and set the racquet slightly above the ball with the face a little open.
Step forward with the front foot as you make contact out in front, keep the wrist firm and finish short. Most of the power comes from the incoming ball and your step, which is why a big backswing usually makes it worse.
Key tips
- Turn the shoulder first; the racquet comes with it.
- Use your free hand to hold the throat during preparation.
- Make contact in front of the front hip.
- Step forward through the ball instead of swinging at it.
FAQ
- What grip do you use for a backhand volley?
- The continental grip, the same one used for the serve and forehand volley. It lets you volley on both sides without changing grips at the net.
- Why are my backhand volleys weak?
- Usually the wrist collapses or the contact is late. Turn earlier, meet the ball in front and keep the wrist firm through contact; a short step forward adds the pace.
