Quick answer & tips ▾Hide answer ▴
An approach shot is the shot you hit from a short ball as you move forward to the net. The best time to approach is when your opponent hits short and you can take the ball around waist height inside the baseline.
Aim deep, often down the line, so your opponent has to hit a passing shot on the run. A low slice approach is a reliable option because it stays low and makes the passer hit up. Keep moving forward after contact and split step as your opponent hits.
Key tips
- Approach off short, comfortable balls, not from deep in your court.
- Depth beats pace: a deep approach is hard to pass.
- Follow the line of your shot toward the net.
- Split step as your opponent makes contact, then volley.
FAQ
- Should approach shots go down the line or crosscourt?
- Down the line is the classic choice because you can follow it to the net and cover the passing angles easily. Crosscourt can work when it pulls your opponent very wide, but it leaves a bigger gap.
- Should I slice my approach shot?
- Often, yes, especially on the backhand. A low slice approach skids and stays low, forcing your opponent to hit up so you get an easier volley.
