How to Hit a Forehand Volley

4 video lessons

Short take-back, step forward, and keep the wrist firm.

Quick answer & tips ▾

A forehand volley is a short block or punch, not a swing. Use a continental grip, keep the racquet up in front of you, turn your shoulders slightly and meet the ball out in front with a firm wrist.

Step toward the ball with your opposite foot as you make contact, which gives you control and depth without a big arm motion. On low volleys, bend your knees and open the racquet face a little; on high ones, you can punch through more firmly.

Key tips

  • Use a continental grip so you never have to switch at the net.
  • Keep the racquet head above your wrist whenever you can.
  • Let a step forward give you power, not a bigger backswing.
  • Finish short, with the racquet pointing toward your target.

FAQ

Why do my forehand volleys fly long?
Usually the backswing is too big or the racquet face is too open. Keep the take-back short and block the ball forward with a firmer face.
Should I hit a forehand volley with topspin?
Rarely. Most volleys use a little underspin from a slightly open face. A swinging volley with topspin is a different shot, used on high, slow balls.
