How to Hit a Slice Backhand

7 video lessons

A low, skidding shot for defense, approaches and changing the pace.

Quick answer & tips ▾

Hold the racquet with a continental grip and take it back high, above the height of the ball, with the face slightly open. Turn your shoulders so you are sideways to the net.

Swing from high to low and forward, cutting under the back of the ball, and keep the follow-through long and out toward your target rather than chopping down. Keep your free arm back so your shoulders stay sideways. A good slice stays low after the bounce.

Key tips

  • Think "forward" more than "down" to keep the ball deep.
  • Keep the racquet face slightly open and steady through contact.
  • Step into the shot with your front foot.
  • Use slice to buy time on defense and as a low approach shot.

FAQ

What grip do you use for a slice backhand?
The continental grip, the same grip used for volleys and serves. It naturally opens the racquet face slightly, which is what you need to put backspin on the ball.
Why does my slice float or go high?
Usually the swing is too steep (chopping straight down) or the face is too open. Swing more forward through the ball, keep the face only slightly open and finish toward the target.
