Slice, drop shots and touch to change the rhythm.

More ▾

Slice is the shot that turns a one-dimensional baseliner into a complete player. A low, skidding backhand slice buys time on defense, makes opponents hit up, and is the classic approach shot. The forehand slice and drop shot add touch and variety.

Begin with the backhand slice using a continental grip. The swing travels from high to low and forward, with the racquet face slightly open, and the follow-through stays long and out toward the target rather than chopping down. One lesson below even argues that the backhand slice is the easiest shot in tennis once the grip is right.

Intermediate players should then learn the forehand slice for wide defensive balls and short approaches, and the drop shot, which works best when it is disguised and used as a surprise. Finally, watch the tactical videos on how to play against slice, since a good slicer can be a frustrating opponent at every level.
