Padel Serve Rules

3 video lessons

Bounce it, hit it below the waist, land it in the box.

Quick answer & tips ▾

The padel serve is hit underhand. Stand behind the service line, bounce the ball on your side, and strike it at or below waist height so it crosses diagonally into the opponent's service box. You get two attempts, as in tennis.

After landing in the box, the serve may hit the glass and stay in play, but a serve that hits the mesh fencing after the bounce is a fault. A serve that clips the net and lands in is replayed. Most players focus on a steady, deep serve rather than a fast one.

Key tips

  • Bounce the ball behind the service line before you hit it.
  • Make contact at or below waist height.
  • Aim deep into the box or toward the side glass.
  • Use your first serve for placement, not power.

FAQ

Do you get two serves in padel?
Yes. Like tennis, you have a first and second serve, and a serve that touches the net and lands in is a let.
Can the padel serve hit the wall?
It can hit the glass after bouncing in the correct box. If it hits the metal fencing after bouncing, it is a fault.
