How to Hit a Third Shot Drop in Pickleball

3 video lessons

The shot that gets your team from the baseline to the kitchen.

Quick answer & tips ▾

Because of the two-bounce rule, the serving team starts every point back at the baseline while the returners move to the kitchen line. The third shot drop is a soft, arcing shot that lands in the opponents' kitchen, giving your team time to move forward.

Use a compact, low-to-high swing that lifts the ball with your legs, and aim for the ball to peak on your side of the net and drop into the kitchen. It does not have to be perfect: a drop that lands short of the line and stays low is enough to let you take a few steps in.

Key tips

  • Lift with your legs and keep the swing short and smooth.
  • Aim for the peak of the arc to be on your side of the net.
  • Move forward after a good drop, then split step as they hit.
  • If you are not ready to drop yet, a deep drive is a fine alternative.
