Tennis Consistency Drills

6 drill videos

Keep one more ball in play than your opponent.

Steps & tips ▾

How to do it

  1. Set a rally goal. Pick a number (10, 20, then 30 balls) and rally with a partner until you reach it without a miss.
  2. Raise net clearance. Aim every ball well over the net, using height for safety instead of hitting flat.
  3. Aim for big targets. Aim at the middle of each half of the court, not the lines. Keep a rough count of how many land in.
  4. Add pace slowly. Once you can rally consistently, raise speed by small steps while keeping the same make rate.
  5. Test it in points. Play points where the first three shots of every rally must land past the service line.

Key tips

  • Consistency comes from margin: height over the net and distance from the lines.
  • Keep score in drills. A number tells you if you are improving.
  • Same routine, same preparation, every ball.
  • Most points at club level are lost on errors, not won with winners.

FAQ

How do I become a more consistent tennis player?
Aim with more margin, prepare earlier and practice rally goals. Most players miss because they aim too close to the lines or hit too flat, so add height and spin before adding pace.
How many balls should I be able to rally?
A good club goal is 20 or more balls crosscourt at a moderate pace. Start smaller and build up.
