Fewer errors through margin, simple targets and a smoother swing.
Quick answer & tips ▾Hide answer ▴
At most levels, matches are lost by errors more than they are won by winners, so consistency is the fastest way to win more. The simplest changes are tactical: hit higher over the net, aim well inside the lines and rally crosscourt, where the net is lower and the court is longer.
Technically, consistency comes from balance, clean contact out in front and a relaxed, repeatable swing. Trying to steer or control every shot often tightens the arm and causes more misses.
Key tips
- Aim three to six feet over the net in rallies.
- Pick targets a few feet inside the lines.
- Hit crosscourt by default.
- Play rally games where you count how many balls you keep in.
FAQ
- Why do I make so many unforced errors?
- Common causes are aiming too close to the lines, hitting too low over the net, being late on the ball or tensing up. Fixing your targets and margins usually helps faster than changing technique.
- Does topspin make you more consistent?
- Yes. Topspin makes the ball dip, so you can hit higher over the net and still land it in. That extra margin is one of the main reasons good players use it.
