How to Play Tennis in the Wind

4 video lessons

Move your feet more, add margin, and use the wind instead of fighting it.

Quick answer & tips ▾

Wind moves the ball late, so the biggest change is footwork: take more small adjustment steps and be ready to reach for a ball that drifts. Shorten your swings a little and aim further inside the lines than usual.

Against the wind you can swing harder and hit deeper; with the wind at your back, add topspin and aim shorter so the ball stays in. Lower your serve toss and keep it closer to your body, and think twice before lobbing into a strong gust.

Key tips

  • Keep your feet moving until the last moment.
  • Use a lower, more compact serve toss.
  • Aim further inside the lines to allow for drift.
  • Add topspin when the wind is behind you.

FAQ

Should I lob in the wind?
Lobs can work well into the wind, which holds them up, but are risky with the wind behind you, where they tend to sail long. Crosswinds make any lob harder to control.
How do I serve in the wind?
Toss lower and closer to your hitting shoulder so the wind has less time to move the ball, and favor spin over flat pace for more control.
