Novak Djokovic Backhand Technique

6 video lessons

Often called the best two-handed backhand ever, explained.

Quick answer & tips ▾

Djokovic's backhand is compact, balanced and almost never breaks down. He makes an early unit turn with both arms and shoulders together, sets his feet quickly, and swings through the ball with both arms extending toward the target.

His balance and flexibility let him hit the same clean backhand from defensive positions and wide slides. He can hit down the line as easily as crosscourt, which keeps opponents from attacking his backhand side.

Key tips

  • Turn your shoulders and arms together as one unit.
  • Get your feet set early, even on fast balls.
  • Extend both arms through the ball toward the target.
  • Practice down-the-line backhands, not just crosscourt.
