Tennis Drills for Beginners

6 drill videos

Simple drills to build contact, control and confidence.

Steps & tips ▾

How to do it

  1. Ball control. Bounce the ball on your strings and on the ground to get used to the racquet and the contact point.
  2. Drop and hit. Drop a ball beside you and hit gentle forehands, then backhands, over the net.
  3. Mini tennis. Rally inside the service boxes with a partner, keeping the ball slow and controlled.
  4. Move back gradually. Step back toward the baseline only when you can keep the rally going up close.
  5. Play simple games. Finish with easy games like first to ten points inside the service boxes.

Key tips

  • Slow down. Control first, power later.
  • Use slower balls (orange or green dot) if full-speed balls are hard to control.
  • Practice little and often: three short sessions beat one long one.
  • Learn the correct grips early; they make every drill easier.

FAQ

What should a beginner practice in tennis?
Grips, contact and control first: drop-hit drills, mini tennis in the service boxes and simple rallies. Add the serve once you can rally a few balls in a row.
Can I learn tennis drills without a coach?
Yes. Many beginner drills need only a partner, a wall or a basket of balls. A few lessons help you avoid bad habits early on.
