Learning tennis is much easier when you take things in the right order. Start with the grips, because almost every early problem (balls flying long, shanks, a serve that will not go in) traces back to holding the racquet the wrong way. Next, learn the ready position and a simple forehand and backhand, then a basic serve. The rules-and-scoring videos are worth a watch early too, so you can actually play a set with a friend.

Once you can rally a few balls in a row, shift your focus from technique to consistency: keep the ball in play, aim well inside the lines and aim higher over the net than feels natural. A practice wall is one of the best free coaches you will ever have.
