Tennis Racquet Head Size Explained

3 video lessons

Bigger head forgives; smaller head rewards clean contact.

Quick answer & tips ▾

Head size is the string-bed area in square inches. Oversize frames (about 105 sq in and up) have a larger sweet spot and more power, so they forgive off-center hits. Midplus frames (roughly 98 to 102) balance power and control and suit most club players. Midsize frames (around 90 to 95) are more precise but punish misses.

If you are new or still spraying balls, start midplus or a modest oversize so the sweet spot helps you. Move smaller only after your contact is consistent and you want more plow and feel. Pair head size with a comfortable weight; a huge head on a very light frame can still feel unstable.

Key tips

  • Beginners: midplus or light oversize first.
  • Miss a lot off-center? A larger head helps more than a stiffer string.
  • Want more precision after you clean up contact? Try a midplus closer to 98.
  • Demo two sizes with the same weight when you can; feel beats the label.

FAQ

What tennis racquet head size is best for beginners?
A midplus around 100 sq in, or a light oversize. The larger sweet spot helps while you learn clean contact.
Does a bigger head give more power?
Usually yes, because the sweet spot is larger and the trampoline effect is stronger. The tradeoff is less precision on miss-hits that still go in.
Should advanced players use small heads?
Many do, but only once contact is reliable. A midsize frame rewards clean hits and can feel dead if you are still spraying.
