How to Put On a Tennis Overgrip

4 video lessons

Start at the butt cap, overlap evenly, and finish with the tape.

Quick answer & tips â–¾

An overgrip is a thin wrap that goes over your racquet's base grip to add tack or absorb sweat. Peel off the old one, then start the new overgrip at the bottom of the handle, wrapping upward with a slight, even overlap and gentle tension.

Right-handers usually wrap so the overlap faces down toward the butt cap when holding the racquet; left-handers wrap the other way. When you reach the top of the handle, cut the end at an angle if needed and secure it with the finishing tape.

Key tips

  • Keep steady tension so the wrap stays smooth without bumps.
  • Use the same overlap all the way up the handle.
  • Change the overgrip when it feels slick or looks worn.
  • Keep a few spares in your bag for match days.

FAQ

How often should I change my overgrip?
Players who hit several times a week often change it every week or two. Change it whenever it loses its tack or starts to tear.
What is the difference between an overgrip and a replacement grip?
A replacement grip is the thicker base grip on the handle. An overgrip is a thin layer wrapped over it that is cheaper and changed much more often.
