How to Hold a Tennis Racquet

4 video lessons

Find the grip with the bevels, then hold it loosely.

Quick answer & tips ▾

A tennis handle has eight flat sides, called bevels, and each grip is defined by which bevel your index knuckle and the heel of your hand rest on. The easiest start is the continental grip: hold the racquet like a hammer, with the edge of the frame pointing at the net.

For forehands most beginners use an eastern or semi-western grip, turning the hand a little under the handle. Serves, volleys and slices use the continental. Whatever the grip, hold it with relaxed pressure, roughly a three or four out of ten.

Key tips

  • Start with the "shake hands" or "hammer" cue to find the grip.
  • Use your index knuckle on the bevels as the reference point.
  • Keep grip pressure light between shots.
  • Use the continental grip for serves and volleys from day one.

FAQ

What is the easiest way to hold a tennis racquet?
Hold it like shaking hands with the handle, with the strings facing left and right. That gives roughly an eastern forehand grip, a good starting point for beginner forehands.
Should I hold the racquet tight?
No. A tight grip tires your forearm, reduces feel and can contribute to arm pain. Firm up slightly at contact and relax again afterward.
