How to Choose Tennis Overgrips

4 video lessons

Tacky for dry hands, absorbent for sweat, change them often.

Quick answer & tips â–¾

An overgrip is the thin wrap you put over the racquet's base grip. Tacky overgrips (like Wilson Pro Overgrip) stay sticky in cooler or drier conditions. Absorbent overgrips (like Tourna Grip) drink sweat and often feel more secure when your hands get wet.

Most players keep a few spare packs in the bag and change the wrap as soon as it feels slick or starts to tear. If you are between grip sizes, choose the smaller handle and build it up with an overgrip instead of forcing a too-large grip.

Key tips

  • Dry hands or cool weather: start with a tacky overgrip.
  • Sweaty hands: try an absorbent overgrip and change it often.
  • Between grip sizes? Go smaller and add an overgrip.
  • Carry spare packs so a worn wrap never ruins a match.

FAQ

What is the difference between tacky and absorbent overgrips?
Tacky overgrips feel sticky and suit drier hands. Absorbent overgrips soak up sweat and often work better in heat or for players who perspire a lot.
How often should I change my overgrip?
Whenever it loses tack, looks dirty or starts to peel. Players who hit several times a week often change it every week or two.
Do I need a replacement grip under the overgrip?
Yes. Keep a good base (replacement) grip on the handle, then wrap a thin overgrip on top and refresh that top layer often.
