Rafael Nadal Forehand Technique

6 video lessons

The heaviest topspin forehand ever, and the parts you can copy.

Quick answer & tips ▾

Nadal's forehand produces huge topspin through a semi-western to western grip, a fast low-to-high swing and a reverse or "lasso" finish where the racquet ends above his head instead of across the body. That spin makes the ball dip into the court and kick up high.

He uses strong leg drive and an open stance, and he generates racquet speed from the ground up rather than with the arm alone. Club players can copy the low-to-high path and leg drive without the extreme finish.

Key tips

  • Brush up the back of the ball, low to high.
  • Try the over-the-head finish on high, short balls.
  • Drive up with your legs into the shot.
  • Aim higher over the net and let the spin bring it down.

FAQ

What grip does Nadal use on his forehand?
A semi-western to western grip, which suits heavy topspin and high-bouncing balls.
Should I copy Nadal’s lasso finish?
Use it selectively. It is great for maximum spin on short or high balls, but a normal across-the-body finish is easier to control for most shots.
